How to recreate Hailey Bieber's viral latte makeup when you have rosacea
Hailey Bieber is a beauty marketer's dream. Why? Well mainly because any makeup she wears will get a catchy moniker and within minutes has gone viral on TikTok and Instagram. The latest viral look is a little trend called latte makeup. And by little, I mean has attracted over 190 million TikTok views. Think creamy, beige coffee but for your face and you've got this makeup look. I promise it's prettier than it sounds.
As with the recent cloud skin makeup trends and glazed doughnut skin made famous by the model and socialite, less is more with latte makeup. It's all about a neutral palette to create this monochromatic, bronzy look where base products are kept super light. This J-Lo glow style look is the perfect summer look because it is lightweight and designed to make you look sunkissed, think 90s supermodel meets clean girl makeup. But having rosacea when the latest iteration of super light, 'my skin but better makeup' comes into fashion can be a challenge. Having skin which is naturally blushed and boasts enlarged pores can be difficult when trying to create a natural look and join the latte makeup club. Of course, there is no pressure to cover your redness to embrace this trend, but if having rosacea and taking on a natural makeup look feels nerve-wracking, fret not. Here are a few little tricks and dreamy products I've picked up along the way as someone who has rosacea but is keen to get as close to looking as glowy and glorious as Mrs Bieber as humanly possible. A girl can dream, ey.
Don't go binning your full-coverage foundation
All the beach-glam vibes that come to mind when you think latte makeup don't have to mean waving goodbye to your favourite full-coverage foundation. If redness covers a large amount of your face, opt for a full-coverage foundation which you know matches your neck, which blends well over a moisturiser you trust and which sits well as a layer under powder products. In my experience you can totally use a full-coverage foundation to create a natural look like latte makeup, provided you apply it with a damp sponge to ensure the layer of foundation is thin (full coverage foundations don't need to be applied with a heavy hand) and the finish is satin (half way between a matte and a dewy product). Using a satin finish foundation will ensure it doesn't cling to any dry, red areas and means that once powdered it won't sink into the pores. I love the Revolution Conceal and Define Foundation for this and for a tenner, you really can't go wrong. From there you can build using the monochromatic warm tones and your skin will still look naturally sunkissed. Keeping your full-coverage foundation will mean you don't have to worry about redness peeking through and attention will naturally be drawn to your beautifully bronzy cheeks and eyes.
Spot the spots and spot conceal
If your redness doesn't cover your entire face, a thinner foundation is your best shout and a slightly thicker concealer will cover any red areas, the best of both worlds if you will *resists urge to sing Hannah Montana*. I love L'Oreal True Match for this as it offers a medium coverage and the consistency is lightweight but buildable. It sits beautifully under The Ordinary's Natural Moisturizing Factors with HA and I apply it with a damp beauty sponge. I'll then go in and spot conceal with Tarte Shape Tape Ultra Creamy concealer. The balance of both base products mean I haven't got to cover my entire face, especially areas like the forehead which, for me, isn't a problem area, in a thick base product which may look cakey as the day goes on.
Powder is your friend
Applied lightly, and I mean lightly, powder doesn't have to be ruled out when recreating Hailey's latte makeup. I have naturally oily skin and I know that if I don't powder, my makeup won't last and redness will start to peek through my base. Though a glowy look to its core, latte makeup doesn't have to mean ditching powder. I love the Revolution Loose Baking Powder (giving Laura Mercier dupe) or the newly cruelty-free Rimmel Stay Matte powder. Going with a translucent powder means you haven't got to worry about colour-matching. Apply over your base products to ensure they stay all day and to create a silky finish to apply your cheek products for a latte makeup that lasts.
Matte bronzer has your back (but keep it warm)
A warm matte bronzer is all you need and more for warming up rosacea or redness-prone skin when embarking upon the journey to perfecting your face's coffee blend. While reaching for a cream bronzer will be a reflex for many recreating this look, the heavier work needed to blend it may disrupt the hard work you have put into the all-important base. If you are in the market for a high-end bronzer, the Charlotte Tilbury Airbrush Bronzer is a fan fave. But if shopping on a budget, don't sleep on the Collection Bronze Glow in Terracotta. Applying a warm-toned bronzer in a C shape (cheekbones, temples and around the perimeter of your forehead) is the key to latte makeup. If once you've finished applying your bronzer you look like you've spent two weeks sunning it up in Spain, you've nailed it.
Keep the highlight high
If you're like me, rosacea also equals texture. This means if I'm not careful with shimmer products on my face, attention is drawn to any texture that happens to grace my face that week. Keeping highlighter on the highest points of your face will help reflect light without making you look overly shiny. Dust highlighter onto the tops of your cheekbones and brow bone to achieve a lit from within milky glow.
Finishing touches
Latte makeup isn't latte makeup without a glowy eye look and a glossy brown lip. Modulate the shade of brown to suit your skin tone and as far as eyes, keep it light and shimmery on the inner corners with a mid-tone brown through the crease. You can keep it coffee-toned with a brown mascara if it takes your fancy and for an evening take, espresso vibe if you will, amplify this trip to Starbucks with a dark brown kohl liner smudged at the lash line with a three-quarter length false lash for added drama. To finish, keep the lips, you've guessed it, brown. The more monochrome the better. Rimmel Cappucino lip liner got the memo for this coffee-centric look and can be topped with a nude lipstick for lighter skin tones or or made deeper with the Fenty Gloss Bomb (my holy grail lip product) applied on top in a shade suiting your skin tone.
I love love love this look and having rosacea hasn't yet put me off getting my bronzer out and doing my best Hailey Bieber impression. Once I've got my seamless base, I feel totally confident warming up the eyes, cheeks and lips. There's also nothing stopping you from keeping your base light and embracing your natural rosy flush. Don't let ideals deter you from enjoying fun makeup trends, especially one as wearable and adaptable for different skin tones as this one. I don't actually drink coffee (ironic, I know) but I'm lapping up the latte on this occasion.
